On Saturday, October 26th at 2:54 pm, units from Atascadero Fire & Emergency Services responded to the report of a vehicle fire described as a truck with a trailer of hay bales on fire. Upon arrival, units found a passenger pickup truck towing a flatbed trailer with numerous bales of hay on fire. Fire personnel took aggressive fire suppression actions and were able to contain the fire to the trailer, saving the truck. The fire did spread to nearby vegetation, but fire personnel were able to stop the spread of the fire quickly. Overhaul operations took approximately one hour, and the City’s backhoe was utilized for complete extinguishment. No fire personnel or civilian injuries were reported.

DESCRIPTION OF CONDITIONS UPON ARRIVAL: First arriving engine observed a pickup truck pulling a flatbed trailer with 48 bales of hay fully engulfed. No extension into the truck.
ANY UNUSUAL PROBLEMS DURING FIRE DEPARTMENT OPERATION: Due to the large amount of hay, the City’s backhoe was requested to assist with overhaul operations.
MINUTES UNTIL EMERGENCY WAS CONTROLLED: 1 hour
INJURIES TO EMERGENCY PERSONNEL OR CIVILIANS: No injuries occurred during firefighting efforts, and no civilian injuries were reported.
